Jointly presented by the Smathers Libraries and the Harn Museum of Art “Korean Art: Collecting Treasures” presents bronzes, ceramics, furniture, paintings, prints and sculpture from the Harn’s collections. The majority of the works were given to the University of Florida in 1988 by General James A. Van Fleet (1892-1992). Highlights from the Van Fleet collection include rare blue-and-white Joseon porcelains and hanging scroll painting masterpieces by Kim Hongdo (1745 – c.1806), Jang Seung-eop (1843-1897), and Kim Eunho (1892-1979), each noteworthy for their quality and rarity in Western collections.
Over the past twenty years, works have entered the Harn Museum from various private collections built during the 1950s and 1960s, a time when U.S. citizens were beginning to more fully participate in either university-related teaching opportunities or studying abroad. Recent acquisitions have added to the sculptural holdings, especially Buddhist art related materials, as well as folk art examples. Curated by Jason Steuber, Allysa Browne Peyton, and Lourdes Santamaría-Wheeler.
